Voodoo Toys' New Campaign Aims to Normalize Female Masturbation

LOS ANGELES — Voodoo Toys has launched a new campaign, “Come As You Are,” which is designed to encourage audiences to view women masturbating as a normal form of self-care.

“This may not come (no pun intended) as a surprise to you, but not only do women experience inequalities in regards to their paycheck, they’re also experiencing inequalities when it comes to their pleasure,” the company says. “So, what’s going on?”

Shot on 35mm film in downtown Los Angeles and directed by 21-year-old Brandie Wedderburn, the campaign follows three women practicing self-care as they go about their day, from waking up in the morning to getting ready for a night out. The campaign’s mission is to break down the taboo surrounding female pleasure and using a vibrator.

“Voodoo’s latest campaign is to show women how a sex toy can be a normal part of their lifestyle, a part of their daily routine — because that’s exactly what should be, normal,” Voodoo’s Brand Manager Sally Cotching said. “It was important for us to have an all-female shoot, directed and produced by entirely female talent so that our photographer and models felt comfortable to explore ideas. This wasn’t designed with the male gaze in mind — our customers should come first.”

With the '70s-inspired brand’s range of wands, rabbits and butt plugs stocked by over 1,000 retailers across the U.S., Voodoo says it regularly polls its followers on their social media accounts and after surveying their followers, discovered that 80 percent of their female followers have reported experiencing fewer orgasms during sex than their male partners.

“Our hope is that by taking small steps, from showing our product as part of a woman’s daily routine, working with educators and partnering with like-minded creatives we will close the ‘pleasure gap’ between men and women,” Cotching said.
